Reluctant Spring
Spring is definitely delayed –
one feels as if it may
never come,
but we can dream
of heavenly hours in new light
and warm breezes that
caress bountiful blossoms.
No need to kick and whine,
spring always keeps its promise
and will eventually arrive.

All Systems Go
The shine of quarter moon
fades into new light
from fire of rising sun.
Mist, a white shroud,
hovers as a gaseous vapor
above lake’s thinning ice.
Nature puts on the other shoe
with all systems set
to go towards spring.

moves slowly forward.
In night’s final hour
Aurora sweeps her long skirt,
shimmering with colors,
across the wide horizon.
As dawn calmly blinks open,
we patiently wait for
short days to lengthen,
spring’s new light to arrive.

Mid-Winter Reverie
In mid-winter, bitter cold
passes into warmth –
wind whispers Southern stories.
A bit of yellow brightens
goldfinches’ gray feathers.
Long nights dwindle
into early rising dawns,
seemingly, a hint of change.
Our hopes, with this small melt,
soar into thoughts of spring.

Winter Song
How noisy this early morn,
when a growl or snore,
even a thumping sound
emanates from frozen lake!
No cause for alarm,
the ice is singing
its wild winter song.
The setting moon’s glow,
like a large yellow rose,
now settles above hills
in faint light of dawn.

The times manifest
an emotional miasma,
runes may pinpoint
the way to rise
from depths of despair.
The dark sky, tonight,
like dome of a deep cavern,
is rich with stars –
fires that burn with
an eternal light.

Yule
A still silent setting
to herald our long dark,
not even a slight breeze.
Lake caught in clutches of ice,
too thin to tread upon.
Wispy trails of ice crystals
settle along horizon,
surround sinking solar glow.
A squirrel quietly munches
sunflower seeds from feeder,
last feast of evening.
Festive lights will flicker on,
fires will be lit
to soften the blackness
and welcome back the sun.

The glow of early sunset
runs a wide pattern
across heavenly clouds
that recalls runes’ scribbles.
In a moment, dark rain
shadows erase the message,
followed by the rich scent
of wet autumn leaves,
scattered across landscape
that pervades the senses.

Autumn Runes
Cormorants’ silent migration
in irregular rune-like patterns:
a mystical message across
time and distance.
Leaves scattered along lake –
what mysteries do they possess
within their demise?
Nature has scratched a note
and stuck it upon the sky
about the change
as light fades slowly
into long obsidian nights.

White Pumpkin with Gourd and Leaves
Autumn Moon
Autumn moon peers
between branches,
as smooth as sticks.
Lost leaves that traveled
on the tireless wind
now lie along roads
or wind up in woods,
trampled by footsteps.
The moon’s enigmatic glow,
sensuous and ladylike,
softens the cold, still night.
