Night of the Star Festival

Caught in the Swirl of Space

Caught in the Swirl of Space

Night of the Star Festival

(Based on the Japanese legend of Tanabata)

Tonight the moon

is a sliver of light

as the wind sighs softly

in the summer trees.

The stars, like crystal jewels,

seem to shimmer more brightly

for this special moment

when the long separated lovers

will walk across the bridge

that lies over the Silver River

and into each other’s arms –

meeting, once more.

Announcement: Lainie will have art and poetry in the Kaji Aso Studio’s “Tanabata:Star Festival 2023″. The opening is on Friday, July 7 at 7pm and online on Sunday, July 9th at 7pm.

Separation

Tanabata 2020Separation Across Sliver River

Separation

In an empty courtyard

trees near the fence

rustle like starched skirts

that sway in a slight breeze,

as stars slowly appear.

Each night brings a different

style of longing: sometimes

the heart aches with loneliness,

other nights there is joy

in anticipation of reunion.

Neither changes the situation

nor brings you closer to me.

Lainie Senechal

This watercolor will be included in a virtual exhibit to celebrate the Japanese festival of Tanabata. The theme  this year is Tanabata:  “An Ancient Story for Modern Times” focusing on the ideas of separation and the wishing, hoping, longing to meet again.

Tanabata Stars & Announcement

Tanabata Stars*

Beyond the Summer Solstice,

on a calm evening, the stars

seem to blossom in the heavens,

accompanied by planets,

with their slowly turning moons,

and exploding supernovas

that surprise even the astronomers.

The lovely star, Vega, appears

with her bright partner, Altair,

forming two points

of the Summer Triangle

and spinning myths that

weave through the ages.

Tanabata: The Star Festival & Announcement

Vortex of Changing EmotionsA Vortex of Changing Emotions
Tanabata #6
As the yearly journey
of separation and sadness

slowly comes to an end,

the pair is overwhelmed by

a vortex of changing emotions –

wishes to secretly slip away

and hitch a quick ride

to the star-studded heavens.

The cycle, however, is fixed,

patience required to wait

for the appointed evening.

One night of ecstasy

that erases the sorrow

of departure and

annual segregation.

Lainie Senechal

Tanabata:  According to legend, each July 7th the weaver star (Vega) and cowherder star (Altair) traverse the Milky Way to renew their ancient bond of love.

Full Moon is a White Rose & Announcement

White Rose

Full Moon is a White Rose

The full moon is a white rose

dropping petals of light

along the bridge and

into the sparkling river.

revolve among the stars,

like whirling galaxies, creating
a mystical atmosphere
for their yearly rendezvous.

Emotions Swirl As Orihime Approaches

Emotions Swirl As Orihime Approaches

Orihime’s Question

Mosquitos swarm in soft night air

where she wanders alone;

observes, with the awe of a child,

stars as bright as flowers

glowing in silent space:

Cassiopeia’s Chair, the Great Bear

and path of Silver River traversing heaven.

Her heart is light as reunion nears;

she wonders, “Where is he tonight?”

“Does he also yearn for

their awaited rendezvous?”
